The Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME) has suspended the results of 193 candidates who were selected under the ‘Freedom Fighter Quota’ in the 2024-2025 academic year medical admission test.

On Monday, Professor Rubina Yasmin, Additional Director General (Medical Education), shared this information with reporters.

She said that a final decision regarding these candidates will be made after thorough verification.

Speaking to shikkhabarta.com, Professor Rubina Yasmin said: “We will verify their documents. For this purpose, three committees have been formed. On January 27, 28, and 29, candidates will have to present all their documents at the ministry. We will check whether anyone other than the actual children of freedom fighters is on the list. If such individuals are found, they will not have any chance of inclusion.”

She further said: “This is a preliminary result. The final decision will be made after document verification. Normally, the verification of freedom fighter quota documents is conducted at the respective colleges, but this time, it will be handled centrally.”

Earlier in the day, Dr Sayedur Rahman, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, commented on the matter at a Dhaka hotel.

He said: “Following the court’s ruling on quota reform movements, a key change was made—grandchildren of freedom fighters are no longer eligible, only children are. This is a policy decision regarding the quota in admissions. The MBBS admission test was conducted in accordance with the prevailing laws and regulations. However, this issue will still be scrutinized.”

He further said: “Among the 193 selected candidates, there are some unusual cases, such as individuals aged 67-68, who are unlikely to have young children. If any discrepancies are found, they will be addressed. Whether the freedom fighter quota will remain in MBBS admissions is a state-level policy decision, not one for the health ministry. The matter will be reviewed on January 27, 28, and 29.”

On Sunday, the DGME announced the results of the 2024-2025 medical admission test.

A total of 5,372 candidates were initially selected for admission to the country’s 37 government medical colleges, including 193 under the freedom fighter quota.

Following the result publication, protests erupted, with students demanding the abolition of the quota system in medical admissions.

Critics argued that some candidates with lower scores were selected for admission, leading to claims of unfairness.

On Sunday night, a group of students from Dhaka University and Dhaka Medical College protested at the Central Shaheed Minar, calling for the cancellation of the results.

Protests continued at the Shaheed Minar on Monday, prompting the decision to suspend the results of the 193 candidates under the quota.
