India will resume issuing tourist visas to Bangladeshi citizens from June 28, 2026, ending nearly two years of restrictions.

The announcement was made by India’s new High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, shortly after he officially took charge in Dhaka. The move is seen as an important step toward improving relations between India and Bangladesh.

From June 28, tourist visa applications will be accepted at five Indian Visa Application Centres (IVACs) located in Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna. More centres are expected to be added later.

Speaking after visiting the IVAC centre in Dhaka, Trivedi said that many people had asked him about visas. He added that while tourist visas are important, medical visas are an even higher priority, and India will speed up the processing of medical visa applications on humanitarian grounds.

India suspended most visa services for Bangladeshi citizens in August 2024 because of political unrest and security concerns in Bangladesh. Since then, only a limited number of visas, including medical and business visas, have been issued.

The return of tourist visas is the biggest expansion of visa services since the restrictions began. It is expected to help tourists, students, and people travelling for different purposes.

Trivedi also said that visa centres will continue improving their services. He suggested better waiting areas for children, drinking water facilities, and easier access for people with disabilities.

Announcing the reopening, he said, “We have reopened regular tourist visas. Applications will begin on June 28. This is good for both our countries and for the people.”
