Bangladesh’s poverty rate now 21.8 percent

DHAKA: The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) said poverty rate in the country stands at 21.8 percent while extreme poverty rate at 11.3 percent.

BBS Director General Dr. Krishna Gayen came up with information at a press conference organized on publication of the final data of the Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) project on Monday (May 13).



BBS director general, at the press conference, said the country’s poverty rate has come down for the development of the government. The poverty rate fell as economic growth accelerated.

According to the data, the final poverty rate in the country was 21.8 percent in 2018 and while the extreme poverty rate was 11.3 percent. In 2005, where the poverty rate was 40 percent, it has come down to 24.3 percent in 2016.

Project Director Dr. Dipankar Roy, Deputy Director Abdul Latif and BBS joint director AKM Ashraful Haque were present at that time.
